English common name issues

Source: IUCN API (English common names) · 615 rows

The table below lists English common names with a likely error or a formatting choice worth checking, with a tidied suggestion where one is clear. Otherwise-invisible characters in the current value are shown as visible markers, and the Taxon column shows which species or other taxon each name belongs to. This re-runs a review of common-name oddities that was hand-compiled against the 2016-2 release, so the two releases can be compared side by side in the summary. Checks that no longer find anything (for example the question marks that once stood in for unsupported characters) are still listed, at zero, so it is clear they ran.

Why it matters

The English common name is the label most people see first. Stray whitespace, species codes, all-capitals text, or a stray marker in that field show up directly in search results, lists, and exports.

Suggestion

Trim the whitespace cases, which are unambiguous. For the Hawaiian names, the suggested form replaces a backtick that stands in for the ʻokina with the ʻokina character itself (U+02BB), so “Hawaii Elepaio” becomes “Hawaiʻi ʻElepaio”; a backtick used as a possessive apostrophe (“Law`s”) becomes a plain apostrophe instead. Missing kahakō (macron) vowels are not added automatically. The other kinds include false positives and stylistic choices, so review them case by case.

Issues by kind, 2026-1 versus 2016

Each kind is counted once per name; because a name can have several, the kinds add up to more than the distinct total. Kinds listed at 0 were checked and found nothing this release. The 2016 column is what a hand-compiled review of the 2016-2 release recorded for the nearest matching category: several of those sections listed only examples, so treat them as a floor rather than an exhaustive count, while species codes and all-capitals read as full lists. A dash means 2016 had no comparable check (only double spaces were measured among whitespace kinds).
